Black Mallee Burl "Gummy" Wood Bowl Wood Art No.7986
Bowl number 7986 is a hand turned bowl made from Australian Black Mallee Burl (Gummy). Each of my bowls are signed, numbered and dated (year). They are finished with a friction polish that's applied while still on the lathe.
This bowl measures 7 3/4" across and is 2 3/4" high.
MALLEE, BLACK - (Eucalyptus porosa) also known as Water Mallee, Black Mallee, Black Mallee Box, Mallee Box and Quorn Mallee. Native to Southern Australia and grows from a height of 39–46 feet.
Heartwood is a mixture of dark golden/reddish-brown sharply contrasted by pale yellow or white sapwood. Nearly always sold in burl form.
Exceptionally hard and dense. The highly irregular grain can be challenging to machine, so sharp tools are required to prevent tear-out.
Common uses are knife and gun grips, pen blanks and custom call making decorative bowls, platters, and boxes resin casting and custom river-table accents.
In Australian burls, "gummy" refers to the presence of natural resin pockets or sap voids common in Eucalyptus trees. These pockets contain sticky, solidified sap (or kino) that creates unique voids and colorful inclusions within the wood's intricate grain pattern. These gummy veins make the wood challenging and dangerous to work.
