HOOK INFORMATION
There are a couple of questions you need to ask yourself when considering buying a NELSONWOOD Crochet Hook. First and foremost is what type of wood or composite do you like? I do have in my shop over 160 types of wood, exotic and domestic. Not all woods make good hooks. That being said, I have found a way to merger woods that do make good hooks with woods that don't, so the sky's the limit.
I make a lot of different crochet hooks. They all have the basic shape, I won't very from that. This shape is documented to help with hand cramping, fatigue and numbness associated with Crocheting. It also helps in lengthening the time you can crochet. Please read a few of my Customer's Reviews, these Folks have bought and are using NELSONWOOD Crochet Hooks.

HOOK PARTS
TYPES OF HOOKS
COMBINATION WOOD - These hooks range from two to three, or more combination of woods. You have the base (body) wood which is the center of the hook and either the tip or ball end or both will be of a different wood. Generally, the tip will use a wood, that works well to make hooks, like Gabon Ebony, or African Blackwood. |
COMBINATION ANGLE/CROSS CUT WOOD - These hooks are the same as a combination wood hook with the exception the base wood (body) is cut at a 45 degree angle or cross cut. This gives the wood a totally different look. It also make the wood weaker. I have a special process that strengthens the angle cut wood. It adds a lot of lathe time to the crafting of these hooks but in the end it's good and solid! |
BURL WOOD - These hooks are some of the most fantastic looking hooks I've made. They will have the same style as my other combination wood hooks and the reinforcement of the angle cut hooks. Burl can be very week so it's not possible to do an entire hook from burl. I use the same process that strengthens the angle cut wood on the burl wood so they are good and strong. |
METAL TIPPED - I've taken my wood hook and replaced the tip with a metal hook. This allows you to have the smallest of hook size (smallest sizes are made with steel hooks) with all the advantages of the Nelsonwood handle. I use the Boye, Bates and Clover brand in this product. I can use other brands but they will need to be supplied by purchaser and sent to Nelsonwood. Please contact me before send any metal hooks. Metal Crochet Hook Sizes
|
Metal hook length is adjustable. Make note of your required length when checking out.. Default length on an Aluminum Boye and Clover hook is about 1-1/2 to 1-5/8 inches from wood to tip. On a Bates hook it's 1-1/4 inches from wood to tip, this is the max for length on the Boye and Steel Boye and Clover steel hooks it's about 1-1/4 inches.
|
PLEASE NOTE : I have no control over the color of the metal on metal tips. I don't make the metal tips they are purchase from a manufacture. Color can vary by size and type even in the same size.
|
Alumilite is a Proprietary Casting Urethane. It's very strong and will not chip or break like Acrylic. It has a wide variety of colors and can make some very interesting patterns. I can also cast items inside the hook like Flowers, Sea Shells and Pine Cones The design will have an exotic wood on both ends.
|
Stabilized - I've recently add a Vacuum Oven and Stabilization cambers here at NELSONWOOD. They give me the ability to get my woods dry, with close to zero moisture and stabilize some real soft but beautiful woods. Also I can add color in the process, which is were all that colored Holly comes from. The process of stabilization, you submerge the wood in a stabilizing fluid while under a vacuum. the vacuum remove all air from the wood. Then you remove the vacuum and soak the wood in the fluid. The fluid fills the voids were the air was making the wood making it stronger and easier to work with. It's a huge help when working with soft and/or spalted woods and makes a much stronger hook. |
Hook Dimensions
Nelsonwood Crochet Hooks are each made by hand. There will be variation. No duplicator or CNC lathe is ever used in the process. The variation is part of what helps the hook reduce pain and fatigue when crocheting. So you should have more then one nelsonwood hook! There are three basic shapes to the nelsonwood line. All of the hooks are customizable and unless specific directions are given (and modification fees paid) the hooks will follow these parameters. Please note that all measurement are approximant. Small variation will accrue, but the Ergonomic Shape will be maintained. Variation will help avoid Hand Memory, which can lead to cramping and pain.
Solid Wood Hooks -
Sizes D-K uses a 1' x 1' x 6" long turning square and the finish hook is about 5" and 7/8" long.
Sizes L and larger use an 1" x 1" x 8" turning square and the finish hook is about 7" and 7/8" long.
Shaft length is about 1" and 1/2" from tip to flare on sizes D-K, about 2" and 1/2" on size L and larger.
Combination Hooks - This hook is laid out in three parts, Hook End (Shaft), Body and Ball End.
Hooks with sizes of D - K start with a 2" and 3/4" long hook end, 3" long body and 1" and 3/4" long ball end. Finish total is usually about 7" and 1/4" long.
Sizes L and larger start with a 3" and 1/4" long hook end, 3" long body and 1" and 1/2" long ball end. Finish total are usually about 7" and 3/4". Shaft is about 1": and 3/4" from tip to flare on D-K, about 2" and 1/2" on L and larger.
Diameter of all hooks at their largest section is usually 3/4" to 7/8". If an exact diameter is required please note when ordering. Please note that smaller then 3/4" in diameter you will lose the ergonomic value of the hook design and order may be turn down if to small. Small diameters also loose a lot of the design patter and or grain of the hook.
Rings - Rings can add a bit to length usually about 1/4" to 1/2" or more, depending on the number of rings. Hook general do not exceed 8"
When picking a ring it's best to avoid picking the same material as the body of the hook, it just blends together.....
A single Ring is usually place between the body and the tip end.
If two Rings are ordered they will placed on either end of the body.
If more then two Rings are ordered you can pick your own placement.
If no instructions are give for placement you are at the mercy of the Artist and will be placed at his discretion.
Please review the pictures at the top of the page for a visual representation of the ring placement.
If you have request changes to the normal layout and paid the fees please give instructions about the change. If you requested a longer length tell where? How long? etc. You won't hire a house painter and not tell him the color to paint the house, right?
Please Note - all measurement are approximant and can vary plus or minus up to 1/4"

Hook Maintenance
Wooden Hooks that have lost their luster my be rejuvenated by a simple process. Use a soft, clean cotton cloth. Add a very small amount of Kerf's Wood Cream to a cloth and gently rub onto entire hook surface. After 20 minutes buff your hook with a clean dry cotton cloth. Your skin has oils on it that will transfer to the hook over time and can be removed with this process.
Kerf's Wood Cream is available in 1 oz only.
