MANZANITA BURL (Arctostaphylos manzanita) grows from Southern California up to Washington State. The wood is a deep red color with yellow tones. Not a magnificent shrub in stature, girth, or symmetry, the common manzanita still stands out against its California habitat. The brown chaparral and bleak earth background highlight the manzanita's remarkably smooth, tight-fitting skin of dark red on its trunk and intertwined branches.
Rarely more than 30' tall at maturity, this native of the dry inland mountains sports an evergreen crown often spreading as wide as its height. Come the winter rainy season, it puts all competitors to shame with showy white or light pink blooms. Later in the year, its twisted limbs bear tiny fruits, which the state's Spanish-speaking pioneers dubbed "little apples," thus giving the plant its present name.
With its gnarled shape and squat trunk, the manzanita never attracts lumbermen. Local crafters, however, find the manzanita's branches appealing in floral arrangements. But in the roots they discover perhaps manzanita's most intriguing aspect. Beneath the ground lies a fascinating burl that, when sawn, cleaned, and polished, can pass for ceramics or marble.
Under the wood turners touch, this "mountain driftwood" evolves into naturally colorful weed pots, vases and bowls. But beware of this beauty. The burls frequently grow around rocks that remain undetected until suddenly hit by a turning tool!

OMG this hook is so gorgeous!! I received my purchase exactly as ordered, and perfectly crafted. The woods are so beautiful and the turquoise inlay really set this hook apart from the rest!! Adding this to my other two hooks that I’ve fallen in love with from NelsonWood. Will purchase again. Great pieces for a family heritage collection ❤️

LOVE LOVE LOVE! Not only is it beautiful, yarn (natural fibers) also glides so easily on it. I was worried about yarn catching but really no issues here! I'm working on a large granny square blanket and was experiencing some pain in my hand and shoulder with my usual Tulip etimo hook. Switching to this really helped and allowed me to crochet more pieces in one setting. Worth every penny! Definitely saving up to get more in the future.

This is a stunning hook. The wood and turquoise together really set it off. Bryan makes the most beautiful and comfortable hooks I've come across. I'm 62 and have used my fair share of hooks.

When I held my new hook in my hands, Manzanita burl with turquoise inlay, it took my breath away. It is a beautiful piece of art, and I enjoy looking at it as much as working with it. Thank you so much.
